How to attach a flag to a shipping container

How to attach a flag to a shipping container

Do you need to display a flag or sign above a shipping container, perhaps for advertising your company or brand? Here’s an easy way to do it, with no drilling or welding required.

Using our Domino Clamps together with 48mm vertical tube clamps, you can get flags up high where people will see them, and take them down or move them whenever you like.

There is no damage to your container, yet it is a solid setup that works well for site signage, flags, or temporary event branding.

What are the benefits of this method?

No container damage: The Domino Clamp attaches securely to the corner casting of your container, so there’s no drilling and no welding needed.

Strong and sturdy: Our Utility Pole Kit is the strongest on the market and will easily hold a flag, and even mount other other items up to 50 kg without a problem.

Modular and reusable: You can move your flag later, swap it out, or add something else.
The system is fully reusable, and with our other brackets you can attach lighting, CCTV, a Starlink dish, and more.

Quick and Easy: Our Utility Pole goes up in only a few minutes, using just a few common hand tools.

How high can I fly my flag above a shipping container?

We have two options for attaching your flagpole. The first, which we call the half height flag option, uses our Utility Pole Kit, which comes with an 80cm pole. If you need to go higher, we suggest attaching your flagpole both at the top and the bottom of the container for added strength. This is the Full height flag option.

Step-by-Step installation of the flagpole

  1. Fix the Domino Clamp

Insert Domino Clamp into one of the side holes on the top corner casting of your container. Tighten up the central bolt with a 10mm hex key and it will clamp in place.

→ FULL HEIGHT OPTION: Add a second Domino Clamp in the bottom corner casting as well.

  2. Attach the vertical tube clamp to the Domino Clamp

Bolt the 48mm vertical tube clamp onto the Domino Clamp using the supplied M12 bolts and washers. Use either pair of holes as convenient

→ FULL HEIGHT OPTION: Attach the bored-through clamp to the top Domino Clamp, and the unbored version to the lower Domino Clamp.

  3. Insert and tighten the Utility Pole

Slide the 80 cm aluminium scaffold tube into the clamp, and tighten the grub screws with an 8mm hex key for a firm, wobble‑free fit.

→ FULL HEIGHT OPTION: Check out this video for a clever technique to easily mount a long pole. In this example for a floodlight, but the method works exactly the same for a flagpole.

  4. Attach the flag

Bolt your flag to the sign brackets using the included M10 bolts and washers. Feed or slip the pole through the lugged fittings, and adjust their spacing on the pole as needed, then tighten the grub screws securely with an 8mm hex key.

What you’ll need

Before you begin, here are the parts and tools you’ll need to attach a flag to a shipping container. Depending on whether you go for the half-height or full-height option, the list differs slightly. Both these options assume that your flag will have an eyelet in each corner for attaching to the sign brackets.

Half-height flag option (max. 3.1 m)

Great for everyday signs or flags, offering visibility above the container edge without being overly tall.

Full-height flag option (max 6.4 m)

Ideal for maximum visibility and perfect for event signage or busy locations. With the modular system, you can extend the pole to a maximum height of 6.4 m above ground.

Conclusion

As you’ve seen, it is simple to get a flagpole onto a container without drilling or welding. The Domino Clamp provides the secure anchor point, and our two options give you the flexibility to go set the height of the flag as you choose. You can even add additional brackets, to mount lighting, CCTV, or other equipment on the same pole.

The end result is a setup that’s strong, safe, and completely reusable. A practical solution for anyone who wants to add a flag with good visibility without compromising their container.
